Teenagers to be prescribed surfing, dancing and gardening as mental health aid – Evening Standard

eenagers in some parts of England will have the chance to participate in activities such as browsing, dancing, roller skating and gardening to see if it leads to improved mental health.The NHS is to

trial the plan, promoting arts and the outdoors as treatment, in 10 parts of England and at about 600 people aged 11-18 on waiting lists for care.Some research studies have revealed that time invested outdoors in nature can have as fantastic an effect on psychological health as antidepressants, although the British Medical Journal has released reports of a more sceptical tone. Academics from University College London

are running the scheme, which is moneyed by The Prudence Trust, and it could be adopted across the country if involvement causes enhanced moods in youths. It is on the back of a smaller scale trial carried out in Luton, Sheffield and Brighton and Hove in 2018-2020. Dr Daisy Fancourt, of the university, stated: “Social prescribing has the possible to support youths while they wait, by offering access to a variety of imaginative and social activities that could improve their self-confidence, self-esteem and social support networks.”Read More Dr Fancourt and her mental health group will examine the expenses of the plan versus the accessibility

looks at individuals holistically and searches for non-medicalised ways of assisting them discover a way through the difficulties they might be experiencing.”Specific dates and locations for the job have not yet been announced.
